RYA Sailing Courses
It is not possible to talk with people about Southampton and not have someone ask if you have managed to go sailing. Our sailing courses cater for all abilities from complete beginners to seasoned Seafarers, offering you a variety of boats, skills to learn and challenges to master. The 'Sailing Pathway' will show you the options available to you as you start to learn to sail.
The University of Southampton has expanded their fleet to include a Sigma 38 yacht to allow students, staff and the general public to get onto the water. The yacht, named Flying Formula, is category 2 coded for up to 10 people and is based at Town Quay Marina near the red jet terminal.
The boat is setup for both charter and bareboat charter and can also be accessed by staff on the evening yacht trips. The University is very keen to encourage the entire community to get onto the water and experience what Southampton is uniquely known for. For more information please get in contact by emailing:
For student and staff bareboat charter we require an ICC or day skipper qualification. An induction will be given to those wishing to take the boat out.
For external public bareboat charter we would require a yacht master qualification coupled with a boat induction.
We also offer evening sailing trips for University of Southampton staff and their families.
RYA training will be offered in due course.
Time spent on the water is key when improving your performance in watersports, but time spent in the classroom can add further skills and knowledge to draw upon.
Time spent off the water learning can sometimes be seen as a waste when you would rather be out doing watersports. However, these colder months are a great opportunity to spend some time inside increasing your understanding. We have many classroom courses on offer covering VHF Radio, First Aid, Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Theory.
