Welsh Dragon Results 2019
December 2, 2019
Southampton finishes 1st, 2nd and 5th at this year’s Welsh dragon.
On Friday the 22nd of November, we were welcomed to Cardiff with a social hosted by Cardiff uni at Retros club on the private top floor.
There were no slip ups during racing on Saturday (unlike the night before #mychinhurts). Wessex ended the day in high spirits - having finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th including Wessex alumni. Ready for a carb-loaded meal that night to refuel for the extreme light winds forecast ...for Sunday. We eventually all made it to a jam packed SU for the night - Jamie was as lost in Cardiff as he was on the race course #sillyfresh.
Racing commenced a little late on Sunday due to the wind - or lack of. A bit of confusion after the round robin due to the very equally matched teams, congrats Crispchin. This lead to a dramatic sail off between Southampton Green and Red for a place in the Semi-finals. The final was between Southampton Green and Blue; Blue won the event keeping their 100% win record. #Wessexdomination
Thank you to Cardiff University and Cardiff Bay Yacht Club for organising the event and for their hospitality.
Also congratulations to Southampton sailors who travelled to Oxford for the Magnum and to Swansea for the Spartan over the last few weeks. Both teams reach a gold fleet at Oxford for the first time in years! And Southampton green won the Swansea spartan! Lots of very impressive sailing from Southampton in the last month! Go Wessex!

Ceci and Allena were top dogs in the firefly fleet (check out their big trophy) aswell as more medals in the fast handicap, laser and firefly 🏆🥈🥉🥉
The team racked up a huge 6️⃣6️⃣ BUCS points (not bad for one weekends racing) 💨
BUCS Team Racing, Yachting and Match Racing all still to come 🙏
Thanks to Sport and Wellbeing as well as Team Southampton for the support! Our branded fireflys not only look great but they’re fast too 💪🏼

Wessex Winter Warmer 2018
This weekend saw the return of our annual team racing event, the Wessex Winter Warmer! We had a record entry of over 30 teams seeking just 18 spots in the highly competitive event.
The Messy Magnum
With the team racing season underway, two Wessex teams competed at the Oxford Magnum this weekend. An event steeped in pedigree but plagued by light winds on the first day meant only 50 races were completed.
Wessex Dominate at Fleets
At the weekend, 21 competing sailors and Tom Mclean made the trip to Draycote Water SC in the midlands (not north) for the 2017 BUCS Fleet Racing Championships hosted by Warwick University. Click Read More to find out how we did!
Another Wessex 1,2
More Wessex sailors were in action over the weekend competing in the British Keelboat League Youth Qualifier, hosted by the Royal Southern Yacht Club. Despite the variety of conditions Wessex came out on top once again with two teams on the podium.
Wessex take impressive 1,2 at Reading
Last week two teams took the short trip up to Burghfield lake where they proceeded to smash all competition out of the water, resulting in an all Southampton final!
Corfu Tour Announced
After a long exam period we think there is no better way to kick back and relax than by heading back out out on the water. This year we'll be heading to Corfu to explore the Med, put our feet up and have plenty of beers!
Yachting National Champions 2017
After almost 6 months of waiting, Wessex have finally been crowned yachting champions once again!! The decision to award Durham redress has now been overturned, handing the rightfully deserved win back to Team Blue and keeping the 5 year streak alive.
