Open Sailing

What We Do

This year's Open Sailing is going to be a bit different from previous years. Our aim is to get as many different people out on the water, as much as possible. We offer something for everyone!

  • Taster sessions - never tried sailing before? Haven't sailed for a while? Not sure if SUSC is for you? This session is for you! Come down and meet the open sailors, head out for a sail and you'll soon be hooked! You can either be taken for a sail by an experienced sailor (if you're new to the sport) or head out on your own if you'd prefer

  • Beginners - New to sailing? Learn to sail at no extra cost by coming to the weekly sessions. We're able to work with you on your RYA Level 1, 2, 3 and more qualifications, all as part of our weekly sessions.

  • Improvers - Already know how to sail but feeling a bit rusty? This is for you! If you're at the RYA Level 2 standard, this will be for you. Take out a boat on your own or with a friend and have some free sailing. We'll run some relaxed racing if you want to get involved with that too! Keep working on your sailing and aim to progress into some of our faster boats!

  • Advanced - We're lucky enough to have access to three RS200s, a 49er and a Laser - come and take these boats out and have a blast round Southampton Water. You will need to have an induction first.

What do we want to achieve from Open Sailing?

  1. Polish and refine people's sailing

  2. Introduce and teach people team racing and fleet racing

  3. Run a day sail to the Isle of Wight

  4. Run a regular Wessex Winter Racing Series

  5. Run an Open Sailing Open One Day Race

The club will always support people looking to progress too! If you're a good sailor who's keen to do their instructor certificate, the club may be able to help fund the course. Similarly, if you're an experienced instructor looking to do your SI course, we may be able to help!
